UK Prime Minister Could Blame Opposition Labour If Brexit Talks Fail - Communist Party

UK Prime Minister Theresa May and her Conservative Party could blame Labour if the talks with the opposition on Brexit fall through, Robert Griffiths, the general secretary of the Communist Party of Britain, told Sputnik

LONDON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th May, 2019) UK Prime Minister Theresa May and her Conservative Party could blame Labour if the talks with the opposition on Brexit fall through, Robert Griffiths, the general secretary of the Communist Party of Britain, told Sputnik.

Earlier on Tuesday, the government and the opposition resumed talks aimed at passing a withdrawal deal through the parliament, where it has been rejected three times.

"I think there are some in the Tory ranks who think it might be quite convenient to blame Labour ... I think she's [May] still in her heart a Remainer, but she thought she could steer some form of Withdrawal Agreement through Parliament that would be the feeblest form of Brexit. I don't think she's going to be disappointed if that proves to be impossible, but even better then if she can turn around and blame the Labour party," Griffiths said.

The general secretary of CPB added that blaming the potential failure on the opposition could "help to keep some semblance of unity within Tory ranks."

"Whether that's actually what she's consciously doing is another matter she may still have a marginal preference for some form of very feeble Brexit, that's possible but then she can blame Labour as to why it's such a feeble Brexit," Griffiths said.

UK Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington said earlier in the day that the United Kingdom would hold the European Parliament election on May 23 as it would not be able to ratify the withdrawal deal until then.

The initial departure deadline was March 29, but it has since been postponed. The European Council has granted the United Kingdom a new deadline of October 31.
