Egypt's Court Upholds Death Sentences for 13 Islamists Charged With Terrorism - Reports

The Egyptian Court of Cassation on Tuesday upheld death sentences for 13 people charged with terrorist activities as part of the criminal case of the Ajnad Misr Islamist group (banned in the country) that had staged a number of attacks on national security forces, local media reported

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th May, 2019) The Egyptian Court of Cassation on Tuesday upheld death sentences for 13 people charged with terrorist activities as part of the criminal case of the Ajnad Misr Islamist group (banned in the country) that had staged a number of attacks on national security forces, local media reported.

The court also upheld other rulings as part of the Ajnad Misr case, the Youm7 newspaper specified.

In 2017, 13 members of the Islamist group were sentenced to death. Another 17 received�life imprisonment, while the other suspects got jail sentences up to 15 years.

The Ajnad Misr group, also known as Soldiers of Egypt, committed a number of terror attacks in Egypt including staging explosions near the country's Foreign Ministry, presidential palace and Cairo University. The group is also suspected of planning a coup, committing murders and attempted assassinations.

Egypt has been facing a period of instability including a jihadist insurgency in northern Sinai since the army overthrew then Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
