UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th May, 2019) The United Nations is aware of the new missile launches by North Korea and views such actions as an attempt to escalate tensions in the region, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing on Monday.
"We are very much aware of the recent launches by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea," Dujarric said. "Such action serves only to increase tensions in the region."
Dujarric pointed out that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres monitors the situation closely and urges all stakeholders to engage in negotiations to promote peace and complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
On Saturday, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said that North Korea launched several short-range missiles from the city of Wonsan toward the Sea of Japan. However, the JSC avoided using the word "missiles" in its later statements. The unidentified projectiles reportedly flew from 43 to 124 miles.
US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that the denuclearization deal with North Korea was still possible, despite the reports about Pyongyang's latest missile launches.
