WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th May, 2019) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed a political agreement between the government and opposition parties as a step toward a permanent peace envisioned in a 2015 agreement, United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a press release on Monday.

"The Secretary-General commends the leadership of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita for the successful conclusion of the consultations that produced the political agreement and a renewed commitment to implement the 2015 Peace Agreement," the release said. "He also welcomes the constructive contribution of opposition parties in this regard."

On Sunday, Keita announced the new Cabinet of 37 members under Prime Minister Boubou Cisse, who was appointed on April 22 to oversee the formation of a "broad-based" government, according to the East African news outlet.

Last week, Cisse signed a pact with both opposition and majority party representatives in the capital Bamako, declaring their willingness to set up a "politically-inclusive" new government.

Mali has been embroiled in conflict since Islamist militias seized the north of the country in 2012 before being pushed back by French troops in 2013.

A peace agreement signed in 2015 by the Bamako government and armed groups has thus far failed to restore stability.
