Sri Lanka Releases 9 Suspects Involved in Easter Bombings on Bail - Reports

The Sri Lankan authorities have released on bail nine out of 10 people, suspected of preparing bombs that were used in the deadly explosions that struck the country in late April, local media reported on Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th May, 2019) The Sri Lankan authorities have released on bail nine out of 10 people, suspected of preparing bombs that were used in the deadly explosions that struck the country in late April, local media reported on Monday.

All the suspects work at the Wellampitiya Copper Factory, whose owner committed one of the suicide attacks on April 21, the News1st media outlet reported. The 10th suspect will remain in custody at least until May 20, the broadcaster added.

According to police, despite the fact the suspects claimed to be ordinary workers, their employee records indicated that they, in fact, spent most of their working hours walking around Colombo and its suburbs to gather information. Police asked the court to deny bail for the suspects but failed to provide enough information to support their accusations.

The court released the suspects on 500,000 rupee (over $2,800) bail and also imposed a travel ban on all of them.

A series of explosions hit Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, leaving hundreds of people killed and injured. Three more explosions rocked the country's eastern city of Kalmunai on April 26. The Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia) has reportedly claimed responsibility for both waves of attacks.
