Syrian Military Regains Control of Several Districts in Hama Province - Source

The Syrian military has managed to take control of several northern areas in the country's western Hama province following clashes with militants, a Syrian military source told Sputnik on Monday

DAMASCUS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th May, 2019) The Syrian military has managed to take control of several northern areas in the country's western Hama province following clashes with militants, a Syrian military source told Sputnik on Monday.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Sunday that at least 250 militants belonging to the opposition Free Syrian Army had attacked the suburbs of the city of Hama, the capital of the same name governorate. According to the ministry, at least 15 militants were killed in retaliatory fire by the Syrian government forces.

"[The Syrian] military launched a large-scale military operation in the north of the Hama province at 6:00 a.m. local time [03:00 GMT] ... It was able to establish control of [two settlements] at around 10:00 a.m.," the source said.

According to the source, the air force and artillery were engaged in the military operation against the militants.

Over the past few months, the Syrian government forces have increased their operations in the northwest of the country with the aim to eradicate the last enclave of anti-government insurgents who have been fighting the government since 2011.
