Zelenskiy's Team Pledges to Continue Ukraine's Course for NATO, EU Membership

Ukrainian President-elect Volodymyr Zelenskiy's team has said that the incoming administration will stick to the country's foreign policy course for accession to NATO and the European Union

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th May, 2019) Ukrainian President-elect Volodymyr Zelenskiy's team has said that the incoming administration will stick to the country's foreign policy course for accession to NATO and the European Union.

"Throughout the campaign, we constantly talked about the Euro-Atlantic course, which we are not going to stop. Moreover, we are going to support it in every possible way ... This is not any surprise that has just been announced. We have been saying it all this time, from the beginning of the campaign to this moment," the team's representative, Sviatoslav Yurash, told the NewsOne tv channel on Sunday.

Yurash also said that the team was actively working on Zelenskiy's foreign policy actions for his first hundred days in office but did not go into detail, noting, instead, that the president-elect would do it himself at a later date.

Zelenskiy won the April 21 presidential runoff with 73.22 percent of the vote, defeating incumbent leader Petro Poroshenko.

Ukraine relinquished its status of non-affiliation with any blocs in 2014 and has since then been striving to join the European Union and NATO. In February 2019, Poroshenko signed a law enshrining these aspirations in the Ukrainian constitution. Both the European Union and NATO, however, have stated that it is premature to speak about Ukraine joining either bloc until the country meets the necessary criteria, which may take years.
