Tariq Bajwa breaks silence after unexpected removal as SBP governor

He said that he resigned to avoid conflict with the government. 

Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 5th May, 2019) Former governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Tariq Bajwa has broken his silence over his unexpected removal in an interview.

The former SBP governor said that he was removed before the completion of his tenure. He said that he could have gone to the court if he wanted but it would have hurt the national interest.

When asked why he resigned before time in an interview to a local tv channel, Tariq Bajwa said that he considers national interest dear to him than his job, that’s why he resigned and did not go to the court.

He said that he resigned to avoid conflict with the government.

After Bajwa's removal, Dr Reza Baqir, who had previously been working with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has been appointed as the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) governor for three years.

According to a notification issued by the Finance Division on Saturday, President Arif Alvi has approved the appointment of Dr Reza Baqir.

"The President of Pakistan is pleased to appoint Dr Reza Baqir as Governor State Bank of Pakistan for a period of three years from the date he assumes office," the notification read.

Moreover, Dr Ahmed Mujtaba Memon has been appointed as the new Federal board of Revenue (FBR) chairman.

Dr Ahmed was serving as an additional secretary in the Finance Division.
