Over 40% of All Drugs Seized in Eurasia in 5 Years Account for SCO - Secretary-General

TASHKENT (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd May, 2019) Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Secretary-General Vladimir Norov said on Friday that the member states of the bloc seized over 40 percent of all drugs confiscated in Eurasia over the past five years.

Tashkent is hosting on Friday the 11th meeting of the parties to the Memorandum of Understanding on regional drug control cooperation in Central Asia.

"Over the past five years, the SCO countries seized more than 40 percent of drugs [confiscated] throughout Eurasia," Norov said at the meeting.

He stressed that since its establishment, the organization has been considering fight against drug trafficking as one of its most important tasks.

Norov also revealed plans to conduct an operation, dubbed Spiderweb, that envisions joint measures of the SCO security services in fighting the drug threat in the second half of this year.

The SCO is an intergovernmental organization created in 2001 in Shanghai by China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. In 2017, a resolution on accepting India and Pakistan into the organization was signed.
