Lavrov Says Warned Pompeo Against Reviving Monroe Doctrine in Relations With Venezuela

TASHKENT (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd May, 2019) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday that, during the latest telephone talks, he had urged his US counterpart, Mike Pompeo, to refrain from reviving the Monroe Doctrine, adding that the intentions to do so were a manifestation of disrespect for Venezuela and other Latin American nations.

The Monroe Doctrine, was a US policy penned in the 1820s that aimed to secure a completely democratic Western hemisphere through influence over Latin America

"[I] warned the United States against ... seeking to return to the Monroe Doctrine since there is a risk to go too far. And I believe that such statements, such loudly declared intentions to return to the 200-year-old doctrine, by and large, reflect disrespect for the Venezuelan people and the peoples of Latin America, on the whole," Lavrov told reporters.

The minister also told Pompeo that Russia's principled position was non-interference in other countries' internal affairs, and Moscow urged others to act in the same manner.

Lavrov and Pompeo held a phone conversation on Wednesday.
