Butina Says She May Be Released Earlier From US Prison Due to 'Good Time'

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th April, 2019) Russian national Maria Butina, sentenced by the US court to 18 months in prison, said on Tuesday that she may be released earlier due to "good time."

"For every year you are given so-called good time so maybe I will be released earlier," Butina told reporters during a conference call.

On Friday, a US Federal court sentenced Butina to a year and a half in prison on charges of conspiring to act as a foreign agent in the United States.

Butina's lawyer Robert Driscoll expressed hope after the sentencing hearing that she could be released by November.

Butina has been in US custody since mid-July 2018, she is currently detained in a prison in the city of Alexandria, Virginia near the US capital.

"At the next stage, I am going to be transferred to the so-called transit center," Butina said. "The authorities will send me to a federal prison, and I will stay there for some time."

Butina pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiring to act as an unregistered foreign agent as part of a plea deal and asked for the time served.

US Judge Tanya Chutkan said on Friday Butina will be deported from the United States to Russia after serving her prison term.
