UN Chief Urges to 'Maximum Restraint' in Venezuela - Spokesman

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern about the recent developments in Venezuela and called on all stakeholders to exercise restraint amid the attempted coup, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing on Tuesday

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th April, 2019) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern about the recent developments in Venezuela and called on all stakeholders to exercise restraint amid the attempted coup, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing on Tuesday.

"The Secretary-General is following very closely and with concern the latest developments in Venezuela, the situation is unfolding as we speak. The United Nations is also reaching out to the parties," Dujarric said. "The Secretary-General urges all sides to exercise maximum restraint, and he appeals to all stakeholders to avoid violence and take immediate steps to restore calm."

Earlier on Monday, opposition leader Juan Guaido urged Venezuelan civilians and armed forces to take to the streets to help force President Nicolas Maduro out of office. Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said in response that the country's armed forces "firmly support the national constitution and legitimate authorities."
