WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd April, 2019) US President Donald Trump and his team have filed a lawsuit to block a subpoena by Democrats in the House of Representatives that seeks to obtain the president's past financial records, a court filing revealed on Monday.House of Representatives Judiciary Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings had issued a subpoena to accounting firm Mazars USP LLP in order to obtain Trump's private financial records to see if he has committed any illegal activity before becoming US president.
"Plaintiffs ask this Court to enter judgment in their favor and to provide the following relief... a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction prohibiting Mazars from producing the request information, and prohibiting Chairman Cummings and Mr. Kenny from taking any actions to enforce the subpoena, until subpoena's validity has been finally adjudicated on the merit," the court document said.
The complaint argues that the subpoena is invalid and unenforceable because it has no legislative purpose, and it investigates events that occurred when Trump was a private citizen.
Cummings has said concerns were raised when Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen testified before the Judiciary Committee that Trump had altered the estimated value of his assets and liabilities on financial statements.
