Americans Bring Flowers To French Embassy Amid Notre Dame Blaze

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th April, 2019) Washingtonians have started bringing flowers to the French embassy in the US capital to express their solidarity with France amid the devastating fire in the landmark Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.

The blaze on the famed Gothic cathedral started at about 6:50 p.m. local time (16:50 GMT). The fire collapsed Notre Dame's spire, two thirds of its roof and the clock. French firefighters are still extinguishing the massive fire.

By the end of the work day in Washington, Americans started heading to the French embassy and laying bouquets of flowers by the mission's fence.

Bridget Fletcher, a student who lives not far from the embassy, came with her mom after watching the tragic news all day. Fletcher, who visited Notre Dame in 2007, also brought a picture of the cathedral that she drew herself.

"We just wanted to share our love," Bridget said, rubbing her hands that were still in paint. "I am here with my mom, it was her idea. She wanted to make sure that France knew that America was in support."

"It's such a horrible thing to happen," she added.

An employee of the French embassy told Sputnik that the diplomatic mission may open a book of condolences on Tuesday.
