Washington National Cathedral Checking Fire Alarms Amid Notre-Dame Blaze In Paris

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th April, 2019) The Washington National Cathedral is examining its fire alarms in the wake of the devastating fire in the landmark Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, France, Preservation Director James Shepherd said on Monday.

"We are checking fire alarms. We have active work there [in the Cathedral]," Shepherd told reporters during a press briefing.

A Sputnik correspondent has reported that the Notre-Dame's roof, spire and clock have collapsed amid the ongoing fire. Some 400 firefighters have been dispatched to contain the rapidly spreading blaze as the fire has leaped to one of the two bell towers.

Shepherd pointed out that the most important now will be to raise money to renovate Notre-Dame.

"The next several days will be the most critical time, they will need to assess the damages," Shepherd said.

In 2011, cracks appeared near the top of the Washington National Cathedral - one of the most famous landmarks in the US capital - after a rare earthquake shook the area.
