SOCHI (Russia) (Pakistan Point news / Sputnik - 15th April, 2019) Russia's Rosatom nuclear corporation is holding talks with both Turkish state and private firms on selling a certain portion of its shares in the Akkuyu nuclear power plant (NPP), which is presently being constructed in Turkey, Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev said on Monday.

Earlier this month, Likhachev said that Rosatom was holding negotiations with Turkish state energy company EUAS on selling a 10-percent share in Akkuyu.

"We are holding talks with both state and private companies of the Turkish Republic," Likhachev told reporters on the sidelines of the Atomexpo 2019 forum in the Russian resort city of Sochi.

According to the Russian-Turkish intergovernmental agreement on construction of the Akkuyu NPP, the share that can be sold to external investors with the consent of the Turkish government cannot exceed 49 percent. The Russian share in the project is no less than 51 percent.

The agreement to build the Akkuyu NPP was signed by Moscow and Ankara in April 2018. The plant's four 1,200-megawatt power units are each expected to produce about 35 billion kilowatt-hours per year. The project's total cost is about $20 billion. Turkey expects the plant's first unit to begin operating in 2023.
