Algerian Police Detained 108 People Amid Mass Protests In Algiers - Statement

ALGIERS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th April, 2019) The Algerian police said in a statement on Friday that they had detained 108 people in the country's capital amid mass anti-government protests.

"To date, 108 people are detained," the police said, adding that a total of 27 police officers were injured in the clashes, while four of them, who were hit by stones and sharp objects, sustained serious wounds.

A number of police cars were also damaged, according to the statement.

Initially, the rallies were held in a calm atmosphere, but at midday, the clashes took place in the area of the Oden Square, located near the Central Post Office. The local police used tear gas, while protesters responded with throwing stones.

In early April, Algerian long-time President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned amid mass anti-government protests in the country. On Wednesday, Abdelkader Bensalah, who temporarily replaces him, called the new presidential election for July 4. The situation remains tense despite Bouteflika's decision.
