UK Parliament Sets Up Sub-Committee to Confront Disinformation, Fake News - Statement

The UK Parliament announced on Tuesday that it is starting a new body that will deal with threats posed by disinformation and fake news

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd April, 2019) The UK Parliament announced on Tuesday that it is starting a new body that will deal with threats posed by disinformation and fake news.

"Today the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee has launched a new Sub-Committee on Disinformation. It will become Parliament's 'institutional home' for matters concerning disinformation and data privacy," the parliament said in a statement.

Launched back in 1997 the DCMS, one of the select committees of the House of Commons, mainly oversees the operations of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

The DCMS argues that the new body will be a "focal point" that is due to bring together those seeking to scrutinize and examine "threats to democracy."

The body is due to hold its first public sessions in May and June this year.

The DCMS Committee explained that it held a number of "high-profile" inquiries into what it called "disinformation" and "fake news" between 2017 and the start of 2019. In its reports it analyzed the issues that have recently rocked the global community, including the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica data scandal. The committee also mentioned alleged "Russian influence in political campaigns."

The West repeatedly accuses Moscow of alleged meddling in political processes, inducing the 2016 US presidential election and the Brexit vote, without providing sufficient proof. Russia has vehemently denied all allegations.
