BISP name not being changed: Fawad Chaudhry

The government was earlier considering to change the name of BISP.

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 2nd April, 2019) Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry has confirmed that the name of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, the minister announced that the name of BISP is not being changed.

Fawad Chaudhry also briefed the media about other decisions taken in the cabinet meeting held under Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The government was earlier considering to change the name of BISP.

Prime Minister Imran Khan was consulting his close aides in this regard.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government was considering to rename BISP as Pakistan Welfare Programme or Quaid-e-Azam Support Programme.

The opposition parties had criticised the government’s move.

Now the government has decided not to change the name of the welfare programme. A number of programmes were currently being executed through BISP as an organization including Unconditional Cash Transfers, Conditional Cash Transfers, Waseela-e-Taleem, Graduation Programme etc.

BISP Chairperson Dr Sania Nishtar had earlier said that no amendment had been placed before the Parliament to change BISP's name and there had been no formal discussion on the subject as well.
