Turkish Ruling Party's Setback in Local Elections Not Sign of Erdogan's Decline -Spokesman

Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin refuted on Tuesday suggestions that the results of the country's local elections, held on Sunday, meant "the beginning of the end" for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and called these speculations baseless.

ANKARA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd April, 2019) Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin refuted on Tuesday suggestions that the results of the country's local elections, held on Sunday, meant "the beginning of the end" for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and called these speculations baseless.

Media reports have recently emerged claiming that candidates from Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) appear to have lost the mayoral elections in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, which are the country's largest cities. Meanwhile, the official results are expected to be announced in several days, after all appeals are reviewed.

"Some are servicing the 'beginning of the end for Erdogan' story again. They will never learn. AK Party won 44.3 % and the [opposition] coalition won 51.6 % of the votes. Erdogan has his mandate until 2023. No elections till then. Stop presenting your wishful thinking as fact and analysis," Kalin wrote on Twitter.

Turkish citizens voted on Sunday for new mayors, municipal leaders, heads of villages and members of village councils, among others.
