EU Parliament's Brexit Coordinator Says 'Hard' Withdrawal Process Now Almost Inevitable

Brexit Coordinator for the European Parliament Guy Verhofstadt believes that the so-called hard Brexit, which may include some sort of an agreement with the European Union unlike a no-deal scenario

BRUSSELS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd April, 2019) Brexit Coordinator for the European Parliament Guy Verhofstadt believes that the so-called hard Brexit, which may include some sort of an agreement with the European Union unlike a no-deal scenario, has become almost "inevitable" for the United Kingdom after the country's parliament once again failed to reach a consensus on how the country will proceed with Brexit.

On Monday, UK lawmakers voted down four alternative withdrawal options in the second round of indicative votes on Brexit. The most popular option was to withdraw from the European Union but remain in the bloc's customs union.

"The House of Commons again votes against all options. A hard #Brexit becomes nearly inevitable. On Wednesday, the U.K. has a last chance to break the deadlock or face the abyss," Verhofstadt tweeted late on Monday.

The UK government and Brussels have reached a divorce deal late last year but UK parliament refuses to back the agreement and cannot agree on any alternative measures. The country was supposed to have left the bloc on March 29 but missed the deadline, and the European Union gave London until April 12 to come up with an alternative solution or leave without a deal on that same day.

On Wednesday, UK parliamentarians may hold the third round of indicative votes. The government may also try to have a fourth vote on the withdrawal agreement.
