UN Expert Team Member Monitoring Libya Sanctions Still Under Arrest in Tunisia - Spokesman

Moncef Kartas, member of the United Nations' panel of experts monitoring Libya sanctions who was arrested in Tunisia last week, has not been released, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing on Monday

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st April, 2019) Moncef Kartas, member of the United Nations' panel of experts monitoring Libya sanctions who was arrested in Tunisia last week, has not been released, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing on Monday.

"As far as I am aware, he [Kartas] has not been released," Dujarric told reporters.

On Tuesday, the Tunisian authorities arrested Kartas upon leaving the Tunis airport. Kartas was a member of a United Nations team monitoring the international arms embargo imposed on Libya.

The United Nations on Friday said Kartas has diplomatic immunity and called on the Tunisian government to release Kartas.

Tunisia's Interior Ministry said in a statement on Friday that two Tunisian nationals had been arrested on suspicion of espionage, but it was unclear whether the statement was referring to Kartas.

Kartas reportedly has dual Tunisian and German citizenship.

The Tunisian Interior Ministry said the arrest came after a lengthy investigation that resulted in the seizure of documents containing sensitive national security information, along with technical equipment for jamming and intercepting communications.
