Ukrainian Interior Minister Warns of Possible Cyberattacks Amid Vote Count

Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said Monday he did not rule out cyberattacks on servers of election commissions counting votes in the latest presidential ballot

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st April, 2019) Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said Monday he did not rule out cyberattacks on servers of election commissions counting votes in the latest presidential ballot.

"We think that a cyberattack, if there is any, will take place during the vote count," he told a Ukrainian newspaper, Liviy Bereh.

He said that cybersecurity authorities had detected attempts on Sunday to scan the server of Ukraine's Central Election Commission for vulnerabilities. They originated both in Ukraine and abroad.

"We are working with system administrators of the Central Election Commission to identify and block these IP addresses. We are also monitoring Commission's internal networks," Avakov added.

Ukrainians voted in a presidential election last Sunday. The results are inconclusive and the runoff is scheduled for April 21. Comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy has the lead with 30 percent of votes after over 80 percent of ballots have been counted. Current leader Petro Poroshenko is second with 16 percent.
