Russia's Bogdanov Discusses Prospects for IS Defeat With Iraqi President - Moscow

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East Mikhail Bogdanov and Iraqi President Barham Salih discussed issues related to the final destruction of the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia), the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st April, 2019) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the middle East Mikhail Bogdanov and Iraqi President Barham Salih discussed issues related to the final destruction of the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia), the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

The meeting was held on Sunday in Tunisia on the sidelines of the 30th Arab League summit.

"A detailed exchange of views on a number of relevant aspects of the Middle East situation with a focus on the final destruction of the Islamic State and other terrorist groups, as well as the problems of Syrian settlement, including the return of refugees, was held during the private discussions," the ministry said in a statement, published on its official website.

In addition, the sides touched upon the issue of restoring the economic infrastructure and establishing political process aimed at ensuring the unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Syria, according to the statement.

The participants of the meeting also raised the issues related to further strengthening relations between Russia and Iraq, including preparations for the next meeting of the intergovernmental Russian-Iraqi Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, which is scheduled to be held in Baghdad in April 2019, the ministry added.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Bogdanov was also received by Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi. The Russian diplomat presented a welcoming address on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the participants of the Arab League summit.

Issues on the agenda of the Arab League summit in Tunisia were also discussed, including in the context of the preparation of the Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum at the Foreign Ministers' level, which is scheduled for mid-April, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
