Thai Opposition Calls General Election 'One of the Dirtiest' in Country's History

The secretary general of Thailand's main anti-junta opposition party Pheu Thai on Friday slammed last weekend's general vote as one of the dirtiest in Thai history

BANGKOK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th March, 2019) The secretary general of Thailand's main anti-junta opposition party Pheu Thai on Friday slammed last weekend's general vote as one of the dirtiest in Thai history.

"The election in 2019 will be remembered in history, like the election in 1957, as one of the dirtiest elections in Thai politics," Phumtham Wechayachai was quoted as saying by the Bangkok Post newspaper.

He criticized the Election Commission for conducting a "disorganized" poll, marred by rampant vote buying and intimidation of opposition parties.

Criticism has been mounted over numerous inconsistencies in the full preliminary poll results, which saw the turnout jump by over 4 million from the earlier tallies.

The count shows that Pheu Thai, allied with exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, won 137 Constituencies with 7.9 million votes, while pro-junta Palang Pracharath won 97 constituencies with 8.4 million votes.

The final results are expected in early May. The new prime minister will be chosen by the 250-member Senate, which is handpicked by the military, and the 500-seat lower house of parliament, where 350 mandates are given to constituency winners and 150 are distributed by party lists.
