UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th March, 2019) The United Nations issues a call for creating a credible and inclusive Syrian Constitutional Committee as soon as possible, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo told the UN Security Council on Wednesday."There are no artificial deadlines, but the Special Envoy [Geir Pedersen] hopes now to be able to move forward as soon as possible to convene a credible, balanced, inclusive and viable constitutional committee under UN auspices in Geneva," DiCarlo said.
DiCarlo said that females must be represented with a minimum of 30 percent on the Constitutional Committee.
Earlier in March, Pedersen said there is progress in the work on forming Constitutional Committee but a specific date for its convocation has not been set. Pedersen did not rule out that issuing a date will happen in the near future.
Creating the Constitutional Committee was first agreed upon during the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi, Russia in January 2018. The Constitutional Committee is expected to include representatives of the Syrian government, opposition and civil society. The United Nations has helped draft the list of members on the Committee.
