Mogherini to Discuss EU Cooperation With Pakistan, Developments in South Asia - Statement

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini arrived in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad on Monday for an official visit to discuss bilateral cooperation with the country's officials and regional developments, the EU External Action said in a statement

BRUSSELS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th March, 2019) EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini arrived in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad on Monday for an official visit to discuss bilateral cooperation with the country's officials and regional developments, the EU External Action said in a statement.

"Today, High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini is in Islamabad, Pakistan, to discuss cooperation between the EU and Pakistan, as well as regional developments," the statement said.

Mogherini along with Pakistani Foreign Minister Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi will also co-chair the fourth EU-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue.

"The Strategic Dialogue was established under the EU-Pakistan 5-year Engagement Plan and meets regularly at Ministerial level to progressively expand the bilateral cooperation, address issues, and discuss foreign policy priorities and global challenges," the EU External Action added.

The situation in South Asia deteriorated last month because of the escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, after the Pakistani military shot down two Indian warplanes in the disputed region of Kashmir, responding to an earlier airstrike by Indian aircraft against what New Delhi said was a camp of Jaish-e-Mohammad group, considered terrorists by India.

The Indian airstrike came after a deadly attack by Jaish-e-Mohammad on the Indian paramilitary police force in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in mid-February. While India has accused Pakistan of supporting the militants and having a "direct hand" in the incident, Pakistan, in turn, has rejected the allegations.
