China, France Remain Opposed to Protectionism, Unilateral Actions - Chinese Leader

Beijing and Paris remain committed to protecting the basic principles of international law and the multilateral approach in international relations as opposed to protectionist policies and unilateralism, Chinese President Xi Jinping said

BEIJING (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th March, 2019) Beijing and Paris remain committed to protecting the basic principles of international law and the multilateral approach in international relations as opposed to protectionist policies and unilateralism, Chinese President Xi Jinping said.

On Sunday, the Chinese leader began his three-day visit two France and held a meeting with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron.

"[Both China and France] advocate for the protection of UN Charter provisions and basic principles of international law, support multilateralism in international relations, oppose protectionism and the policy of unilateral actions," Xi said during his meeting with Macron, as quoted by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The Chinese leader also noted that Beijing attached great importance to relations with Paris and had always considered the European country its priority partner.

"The [two] sides should always seek new spheres of cooperation, contribute to the coordinated implementation of the One Belt One Road initiative [on cooperation between Eurasian nations] and to the cooperation in third countries' markets," Xi added.

The Chinese president also stressed that Beijing was ready to continue enhancing its strategic coordination with France on key issues, including the work of the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and climate change.

China has repeatedly voiced its support for multilateralism, especially amid protectionist policies implemented by US President Donald Trump, who unleashed tariff wars on some of its key allies and Beijing.
