Ecuador's President Announces Quito's Planned Withdrawal From S. American Nations Union

Ecuador's President Lenin Moreno said Quito planned to pull out from the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) in the near future following a number of other member states that have suspended their membership of the regional bloc

CARACAS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th March, 2019) Ecuador's President Lenin Moreno said Quito planned to pull out from the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) in the near future following a number of other member states that have suspended their membership of the regional bloc.

"Today, I would like to inform Ecuadorians about our final withdrawal from UNASUR ... Half of the member states of the alliance neither participate in its activities nor make any contribution to it. The position of the secretary general remains vacant for over two years," Moreno said in an address to the nation, as aired by Ecuador's state-run tv channel.

Last year, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Paraguay said they were suspending their membership of UNASUR due to disagreements about the candidacy of the secretary general and the bloc's stance on Venezuela's politics. After it, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela remained the active members of the alliance.

Meanwhile, Chile's President Sebastian Pinera said in February, that Santiago would convene a summit of the so-called Prosur regional group, excluding Venezuela, to replace UNASUR.
