WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th March, 2019) US President Donald Trump in his latest budget proposal has requested around $2.6 billion for the development of hypersonic weapon systems, the US Department of Defense said on Tuesday."Hypersonics - Enables Air Force prototyping, Navy Sea-Launched Conventional Prompt Strike, and Army Land-Launched Limited Operational Capability (Fiscal Year 2020 $2.6 billion)," the Defense Department said in an overview of its FY 2020 budget request.
The Pentagon cautioned that any investment in innovation, including hypersonic weapon development, runs the risk of an uncertain outcome. However, the efforts are necessary to counter Russia and China's advancements in hypersonic technology, it said.
In December 2018, the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in a report that the United States has no countermeasures or effective defense against the new generation of hypersonic weapons being developed by both Russia and China.
