Singapore's Civil Aviation Authority Temporarily Grounds Boeing 737 MAX After Deadly Crash

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) announced on Tuesday that it temporarily suspended operation of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft after the recent deadly crash of a passenger plane of the same model in Ethiopia

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th March, 2019) The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) announced on Tuesday that it temporarily suspended operation of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft after the recent deadly crash of a passenger plane of the same model in Ethiopia.

The crash involving Ethiopian Airlines' Flight ET 302 occurred in the morning of March 10, minutes after the Nairobi-bound plane took off from the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. All 157 people from over 30 countries who were on board the Boeing were killed. The causes of the accident are yet unknown. According to the airline, the plane was well-maintained.

"The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) is temporarily suspending operation of all variants of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft into and out of Singapore in light of two fatal accidents involving Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in less than five months. The suspension will take effect from 1400hrs, 12 March 2019," the CAAS said in a statement.

The CAAS also noted that it would try to minimize any impact of this move to traveling passengers, adding that it monitored the situation and gathered information on possible risks related to continued operation of this model of aircraft.

The latest catastrophe in Ethiopia is the second fatal incident involving the narrow-body aircraft in less than five months. In late October 2018, another Boeing 737 MAX 8, operated by Indonesia's Lion Air, plunged into the Java Sea shortly after take-off, claiming the lives of 189 people.
