May Says UK to Face 'Uncertainty' If Parliament Turns Down Brexit Agreement

UK Prime Minister Theresa May said on Friday that the United Kingdom will be hit with uncertainty if the country's parliament votes down the agreement next week on withdrawal from the European Union

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th March, 2019) UK Prime Minister Theresa May said on Friday that the United Kingdom will be hit with uncertainty if the country's parliament votes down the agreement next week on withdrawal from the European Union.

"Back it [the divorce deal] and the UK will leave the EU, reject it and no one knows what will happen ... We may not leave the EU for many months. We may leave without the protections that the deal provides. We many never leave at all. The only certainty would be ongoing uncertainty. Months more spent arguing about Brexit," May said in her speech in Grimsby, the eastern seaport city in England.

In January, UK lawmakers rejected the existing version of the UK-EU Brexit deal, citing fears that the United Kingdom might remain in a permanent customs union with the bloc should the backstop policy, aimed at preventing a hard border on the island of Ireland, remain in its current form.

However, EU officials have repeatedly said that the Brexit deal is not subject to renegotiation.

May has promised to hold another parliamentary vote on the withdrawal agreement by March 12, which will mark just over two weeks before the UK effective withdrawal from the European Union on March 29.
