UN, Red Crescent Deliver Humanitarian Aid To Syria's Manbij - Spokesman

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th March, 2019) The United Nations and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent completed the delivery of humanitarian aid targeting 50,000 people in Manbij, Syria, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing on Thursday.

"Today, the United Nations and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent completed an interagency convoy delivering humanitarian assistance to meet urgent needs of 50,000 people in the Manbij area and surrounding areas in the north west of Aleppo governorate," Dujarric said.

More than 860 metric tons of food and other relief supplies transported by 37 trucks will be distributed by the Red Crescent in the coming days, Dujarric explained.

The food supplies are expected to last approximately 30 days while medical supplies will treat more than 80,000 individuals, Dujarric added.

The United Nations has called for safe and unhindered humanitarian access to facilitate the distribution of aid and noted that it would prioritize vulnerable populations in receiving the supplies.

Manbij used to be a stronghold of the Islamic State terror group (banned in Russia) and is now under Syrian Democratic Forces control, which is supported by the US-lead coalition operating in Syria.

The activities of the US-led coalition have not been authorized by the Syrian government or the UN Security Council.
