Russia supports the Montevideo mechanism of resolving the Venezuela crisis and may consider joining it if necessary, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday
MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th February, 2019) Russia supports the Montevideo mechanism of resolving the Venezuela crisis and may consider joining it if necessary, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday."We support this mechanism at this stage. We believe mediators need to be involved but only if their intermediary efforts are coordinated and accepted by Venezuela and, obviously, aim to find a constructive way out of the crisis in and outside Venezuela... If our services are needed we will certainly consider this [contributing to the mechanism]," she told reporters.
Venezuela is in the midst of political turmoil. Tensions escalated in January when US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido proclaimed himself interim president. Legitimate President Nicolas Maduro continues to enjoy support of Russia, China and many other countries.
