US Urges Moldova To Probe Allegations Of Vote Buying, Misuse Of Resources - State Dept.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th February, 2019) The United States calls on Moldovan authorities to investigate allegations that voter fraud was committed during the parliamentary elections, State Department Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino said in a press release.

On Sunday, Moldova held its parliamentary elections which the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) International Election Observation Mission said were transparent and positive despite difficulties due to a new electoral system.

"We share OSCE concerns, however, including allegations of bribing voters and misuse of administration resources, and we call on Moldovan authorities to investigate these claims," Palladino said.

The OSCE mission also concluded that although rights were "generally respected," the campaign was tainted by allegations of pressure on public employees, strong indications of vote buying, and the misuse of state resources.

Moldovan President Igor Dodon said on Wednesday that the country's Constitutional Court should make a final ruling concerning the issue of recognition of the parliamentary elections by March 10.

According to the Central Election Commission (CEC), Moldova's opposition Party of Socialists won with 31.15 percent of the votes. The pro-European ACUM bloc secured 26.84 percent, the ruling Democratic Party received 23.62 percent, and the conservative SOR Party got 8.32 percent.
