Taliban Continues Doha Talks With US on Troop Pullout - Representative

The Taliban militant group continued talks with US delegates in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday in a bid to end the war in Afghanistan

DOHA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th February, 2019) The Taliban militant group continued talks with US delegates in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday in a bid to end the war in Afghanistan.

Taliban delegates have been meeting with US lead negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad, the special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation, since Monday.

"Negotiations are continuing," Khirullah Khairkhwa, a member of the Doha-based Taliban political office and its former interior minister, told Sputnik after emerging briefly from the closed-door meeting.

A source in the Afghan delegation said, in a comment to Sputnik, that negotiators agreed in January to work out technicalities of the US troop pullout from Afghanistan, which is demanded by the Taliban.

"They are expected to discuss their proposals at this meeting, most importantly the possible timeframe for the withdrawal of US forces," the source said.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed on Twitter that technical groups had discussed foreign forces withdrawal all day on Tuesday and until noon hours on Wednesday.

This round of talks will wrap up on Thursday. At the end of the January round, the US representative announced the Taliban were ready to guarantee they would not harbor al-Qaeda terrorists (banned in Russia) in Afghanistan in return for ending US military presence.
