Russia is interested in implementing railroad infrastructure projects in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia, the Russian Transport Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th February, 2019) Russia is interested in implementing railroad infrastructure projects in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia, the Russian Transport Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement was issued shortly after the middle East Rail 2019 exhibition concluded in Dubai. Russian Deputy Transport Minister Vladimir Tokarev discussed cooperation in this field with UAE Infrastructure Development Minister Abdullah Belhaif Nuaimi and Saudi Railway Organization President Rumaih Mohammed Rumaih on the sidelines of the event.

"The Russian side informed our colleagues about its competences and has expressed interest in implementing railroad infrastructure projects in the UAE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ... Our Arab colleagues, in turn, confirmed their interest in cooperation and suggested to continue communication in the bilateral meeting format," the statement read.

Tokarev also held a meeting with Egyptian Deputy Transport Minister Amr Abdelsalam Shaat on the sidelines of the exhibition.

"They discussed Russian-Egyptian railroad cooperation, in particular, the deliveries of Russian passenger carriers. They have also touched upon prospects of cooperation on complex reconstruction of the Egyptian railway infrastructure," the statement read.

In late September 2018, the Transmashholding-Hungary, a Russian-Hungarian railway car building consortium, and Egyptian National Railways (ENR) signed a five-year contract to have 1,300 passenger cars delivered to Egypt. Transmashholding-Hungary was awarded the contract after winning the bid called by ENR. The total cost of the contracts is estimated at 1 billion Euros ($1.14 billion).
