BP Forecasts Carbon Emissions to Rise 7% by 2040 Contrary to Paris Climate Goals - CEO

UK oil and gas multinational BP forecasts carbon emissions to rise by 7 percent by 2040 contrary to the goals of the Paris climate deal, company CEO Bob Dudley said Tuesday

LONDON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th February, 2019) UK oil and gas multinational BP forecasts carbon emissions to rise by 7 percent by 2040 contrary to the goals of the Paris climate deal, company CEO Bob Dudley said Tuesday.

"Carbon emissions are seen rising by around 7 percent by 2040, when we all know that meeting goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement requires emissions to fall rapidly. That's the dual challenge that the world faces - producing more energy with fewer emissions," Dudley said at the International Petroleum Week conference in London.

The rising emissions will be caused by increasing energy demand in the future, he added.

"Global energy demand is expected to grow by around one-third by 2040, and that's a lot. But it is at significantly lower rate than in previous 20 years. The demand grows on particularly improving living standards of India and China," the group chief executive said.

The Paris climate deal, created within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, went into force on November 4, 2016. It has been ratified by 184 of the 197 parties to the accord. The deal aims to keep the increase in average global temperature at below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels by means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
