PARIS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th February, 2019) French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday praised the US decision to keep a few hundred troops in Syria after initially announcing a full pullout."I can only welcome this decision, which is in line with our calls to stay close to the Syrian Democratic Forces, among others, and those fighting the Islamic State [terrorist group, banned in Russia]," he told reporters.
Macron, who was speaking at a press conference in Paris alongside Iraqi President Barham Salih, said France would continue operating in the region as part of an international coalition.
US President Donald Trump surprised his allies in December by announcing a prompt withdrawal of 2,000 troops from Syria.
CNN reported over the weekend that he had reversed his decision, agreeing to keep 200 troops in Syria's northeast as a buffer between Turkish and Syrian Kurdish forces, in addition to 200 personnel at At-Tanf base.
