Moscow Urges UN HRC to Make Join Statement on Inadmissibility of Language Discrimination: Sergey Vershinin

Russia will present a joint statement on the inadmissibility of discrimination on linguistic grounds at the 40th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin said Monday

GENEVA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th February, 2019) Russia will present a joint statement on the inadmissibility of discrimination on linguistic grounds at the 40th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin said Monday.

"We hope that the members and observers of the council will join it and thus contribute to combating discrimination, ensuring the equal enjoyment of all human rights for all, and promoting linguistic and cultural diversity ... Discriminatory restrictions on the use of the mother tongue are unacceptable," Vershinin said, speaking at the opening of the session.

He noted that language was an integral part of the cultural and social identity of each person.

Vershinin also stressed that it was high time for UN Human Rights Council to "say no" to discrimination based on language.
