Incumbent Nigerian President Casts Vote in General Election - Reports

Incumbent Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has cast his ballot in the northern Nigerian town of Daura as part of general election held on Saturday, local media reported

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd February, 2019) Incumbent Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has cast his ballot in the northern Nigerian town of Daura as part of general election held on Saturday, local media reported.

According to The Nation newspaper, the president, who is seeking re-election, arrived in his home town with his wife and voted at around 8:10 a.m. local time (07:10 GMT).

Meanwhile, the outlet also reported that some polling stations had not opened on time, prompting local residents to voice concerns that the delays could be a deliberate attempt to meddle in the electoral process.

Buhari, who has been in office since 2015 and is representing the ruling All Progressives Congress party, is considered to be one of the front-runners in the race along with opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar.

Apart from the head of state, the country's citizens are also choosing the new vice president and the members of the 469-seat bicameral parliament.

In order to clinch victory in the first round, a presidential candidate must not only secure the majority of votes but also win over 25 percent of votes in at least 24 out of the country's 36 states.

The general election was originally scheduled for February 16 but was postponed for a week just hours before the vote was scheduled to begin, after electoral officials said that they still had to take care of some problems in order to maintain the quality of the elections.
