Germany's Die Linke Party Urges Berlin, EU to Cancel Recognition of Guaido's Leadership

Germany and other EU member states should withdraw their recognition of the leadership of Venezuelan parliament speaker Juan Guaido, which constitutes a violation of international law, Andrej Hunko, a spokesman for Germany's the Left Party (Die Linke) in the Bundestag Committee on the Affairs of the European Union, told Sputnik on Thursday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd February, 2019) Germany and other EU member states should withdraw their recognition of the leadership of Venezuelan parliament speaker Juan Guaido, which constitutes a violation of international law, Andrej Hunko, a spokesman for Germany's the Left Party (Die Linke) in the Bundestag Committee on the Affairs of the European Union, told Sputnik on Thursday.

A recent report by the German parliament's independent scientific research service, commissioned by Hunko, found that there were "strong reasons" to consider the international recognition of Guaido, who proclaimed himself the interim president of Venezuela last month, as illegal interference in the country's internal affairs.

"Germany should act as a mediator in order to support a peaceful and political solution to the conflict in Venezuela ... We call on the German government and other EU member states to withdraw the formal recognition of Guaido," Hunko said.

According to the spokesman, Berlin missed an opportunity to play a positive role in finding the solution to the Venezuelan crisis "by recognizing Juan Guaido as Venezuela's president in violation of international law."

"Venezuela needs a political solution based on negotiations without outside interference. I think the initiative supported by Uruguay, Mexico, Bolivia and the CARICOM [Caribbean Community] states is the best framework for this," Hunko stressed.

Earlier this month, Mexico, Uruguay and the CARICOM proposed the so-called Montevideo mechanism, which envisages four stages: the immediate launch of a dialogue on the situation in Venezuela, the negotiation process and the drafting of an agreement and its implementation.

Dr. Anton Friesen, a member of the Bundestag Committee on Foreign Affairs from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, told Sputnik, on his part, that the international community should convene a conference on Venezuela, which would involve such key powers like China, Russia and Turkey.

"We should strive for a conference on Venezuela with all the main powers like China, Russia, Turkey and the United States on a table. Germany should be the mediator. The conference should aim at free elections of the parliament and president," Friesen underlined, describing the recognition of Guaido as "an unlawful act of the German government."

Earlier this month, Germany and other eight European nations joined the United States in recognizing Guaido's leadership after the expiry of an eight-day ultimatum for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to call a new election.

Russia, China and Mexico, among other nations, voiced support for Maduro, who called Guaido a "puppet" of Washington.
