Taiwan's Cabinet Passes Historical Bill on Same-Sex Marriages - Reports

Taiwan's cabinet has passed a bill that seeks to give gay couples the same legal protections as those given to married ones, making it the first Asian country to do so, local media reported Thursday

BEIJING (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st February, 2019) Taiwan's cabinet has passed a bill that seeks to give gay couples the same legal protections as those given to married ones, making it the first Asian country to do so, local media reported Thursday.

A heated debate about gay marriage was reopened in Taiwan after its top court ruled a ban on same-sex unions unconstitutional in May 2017.

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vowed to legalize gay marriage but ran into opposition from conservatives who did not want it to change the Civil Code, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman, according to the Central news Agency.

The DPP commands a majority in parliament, which is expected to back the bill by March 24. If enacted, the bill will grant gay couples the same rights as traditional ones, including the right to inheritance and adoption of the partner's biological children.
