WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th February, 2019) The United States does not seek to divide Syria and supports the country's territorial unity, State Department spokesperson Robert Palladino said during a press briefing.
Earlier on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the goal of the United States is to split Syria and create a quasi-state on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River.
"We support the unity and territorial integrity of Syria," Palladino said Tuesday when asked to comment on Lavrov's remarks. "This is misinterpretation of the United States policy."
He added that Washington has no plans to divide Syria and supports a political solution to the crisis in the middle Eastern country.
According to Lavrov, the United States is already investing in the reconstruction of the areas to the east of the Euphrates and is making its allies follow suit.
The US troops have been operating in Syria as part of an international coalition for about five years without the permission from the Syrian authorities and the United Nations Security Council. The United States has, in particular, supported the Kurdish-led militia controlling the territories to the east of the Euphrates and opposing the Syrian government.
