Over 20 terrorist groups with different ideologies and objectives are currently operating in Afghanistan, Andrey Novikov, the head of the Commonwealth of Independent States Anti-Terrorism Center (CIS ATC), said on Tuesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th February, 2019) Over 20 terrorist groups with different ideologies and objectives are currently operating in Afghanistan, Andrey Novikov, the head of the Commonwealth of Independent States Anti-Terrorism Center (CIS ATC), said on Tuesday.

"According to our partners' estimates, more than 20 terrorist groups are operating only in Afghanistan. At the same time, we can fully assess their ideological and political diversity, intersection and inconsistency of interests, connection with conventional organized crime," Novikov said during a meeting of the heads of national anti-terrorism centers of the CIS member states.

Novikov noted that security forces, intelligence services and law enforcement agencies of the CIS member states assessed situation in the Syrian-Iraqi and Afghan-Pakistani zones as complicated.

Established in June 2000, the ATC is a permanent specialized institution of the CIS. The center coordinates the activity of the relevant CIS authorities in the sphere of combating international terrorism and other acts of extremism.
