Russian Foreign Ministry Says Relief Aid to Venezuela by US on February 23 'Provocation'

The plan to force relief aid into Venezuela is a provocation that may be a prelude to an invasion or a test of the troops' loyalty, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th February, 2019) The plan to force relief aid into Venezuela is a provocation that may be a prelude to an invasion or a test of the troops' loyalty, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said Monday.

"The situation in Venezuela is on a worrying trajectory. The US-backed opposition has announced events for February 23 that ... could be called a chronicle of a provocation foretold," Maria Zakharova said.

The United States has been stockpiling what it says is humanitarian aid on the Colombian border. Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido said the supplies would enter the country on February 23, despite Venezuelan troops guarding the border.

"Considering the stance of [Venezuela's] legitimate authorities, the forces behind this act [aid delivery] want to storm the border, provoking a forceful response from the border patrol and the troops. They want either to cause a split within the military or to create martyrs ... to justify an invasion," Zakharova added.

The spokeswoman stressed that a delivery of a "couple hundred million Dollars" worth of humanitarian aid would be a hypocritical act after six years of sanctions on Venezuela's economy had cost it $345 billion. She also suggested that aid could be brought in using UN agencies.
