MUNICH (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th February, 2019) Washington is calling for changes in the Syrian government's politics and not for the dismissal of President Bashar Assad, James Jeffrey, the US special representative for Syria Engagement, said on Sunday.
"We are not [calling for president Assad to go], we are calling for a major change in the behavior of the [Syrian] regime to bringing in line with a dozen UN and other international agreements on how to treat your own citizens and how to do with the neighborhood," the representative said at the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
The United States has been operating in Syria at the head of an international coalition since 2014 without securing approval from either Damascus or the United Nations Security Council. Assad has accused Washington of trying to overthrow the Syrian government and providing support to armed militants.
