US, China Make Progress in 'Detailed and Intensive' Trade Talks in Beijing - White House

The United States and China have made progress in the trade talks held in Beijing this week and will continue ahead of the March 1 deadline for imposing additional tariffs on Chinese goods, the White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement on Friday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th February, 2019) The United States and China have made progress in the trade talks held in Beijing this week and will continue ahead of the March 1 deadline for imposing additional tariffs on Chinese goods, the White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement on Friday.

"These detailed and intensive discussions led to progress between the two parties," the statement said. "Both sides will continue working on all outstanding issues in advance of the March 1, 2019, deadline for an increase in the 10 percent tariff on certain imported Chinese goods."

Sanders noted that the US and Chinese trade delegations met on Friday with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss the progress made in the talks.

However, Sanders acknowledged that much more work remains to be done and emphasized that the United States and China are scheduled to continue the trade talks.

"Next week, discussions will continue in Washington at the ministerial and vice-ministerial levels. The United States looks forward to these further talks and hopes to see additional progress," Sanders said.

China and the United States have been engaged in a trade war since US President Donald Trump announced in June that the United States would impose 25 percent tariffs on $50 billion of Chinese goods in a bid to fix the US-Chinese trade deficit. Since, the two countries have exchanged several rounds of trade tariffs.
