China, US to Continue Trade Talks Next Week in Washington - Reports

China and the United States made progress during this week's trade negotiations in Beijing and agreed to continue consultations in Washington next week, local media reported on Friday, citing an informed source

BEIJING (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th February, 2019) China and the United States made progress during this week's trade negotiations in Beijing and agreed to continue consultations in Washington next week, local media reported on Friday, citing an informed source.

High-level trade negotiations between the two countries were held in Beijing on Thursday and Friday. China was represented by Vice Premier Liu He, while the US delegation was headed by Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

"Talks will continue next week among the same group of people, but at a different place," the source told the South China Morning Post newspaper.

According to the news outlet, negotiations will continue in the US capital because the progress achieved in Beijing was still not enough to yield a final agreement that would end the trade war.

The Chinese delegation may head to Washington next Thursday, the newspaper's source added.

The talks in Beijing took place two weeks before US duties on Chinese goods are expected to increase, something that could provoke yet another round of the trade war between the countries. In late November, US President Donald Trump postponed this increase until March 1, noting that it could be avoided if the parties managed to strike a deal.
