EU, US Share Stance on Iran's Negative Role in Mideast, Disagree on Modus Operandi -Warsaw

The European Union shares the position of the United States regarding the negative role that Iran is playing in the Middle East, however, Brussels and Washington have different views on modus operandi, in particular with regard to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear issue, Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said Thursday

WARSAW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th February, 2019) The European Union shares the position of the United States regarding the negative role that Iran is playing in the middle East, however, Brussels and Washington have different views on modus operandi, in particular with regard to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear issue, Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said Thursday.

"The negative role played by Iran [was discussed], though Iran was not the main topic, but looking at various horizontal problems, the role of this country was also mentioned. And this is also the position of the European Union, Poland is a member state of the European Union, and subscribes to this point of view. However, the European Union and the United States differ in terms of modus operandi, especially the evaluation of JCPOA," Czaputowicz said at the press conference on the results of the ministerial on the Middle East in Warsaw.

Czaputowicz noted that during discussions on Thursday, representatives of Berlin, Paris and London indicated the positive role played by the nuclear deal with Tehran.

The United States last year reintroduced sanctions on Iran that were waived under the nuclear accord, co-signed by Russia, China and three EU countries, which vowed to stay in the agreement and continue non-dollar trade with Tehran. In late January, France, Germany and the United Kingdom announced the establishment of a mechanism designed to circumvent US sanctions against Iran and keep the nuclear deal afloat.

The two-day conference, jointly organized by the United States and Poland, began on Wednesday. The gathering stirred controversy after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo billed it last month as a meeting focused on confronting Iran, which he called a "destabilizing influence." The organizers have since rowed back on their objective, having called it "Ministerial to Promote a Future of Peace and Security in the Middle East."
